Ugly Betty 1.11 'Fake Plastic Snow'

Amanda is one of the few TV characters that you have to root for, no matter how depraved and nuts she may get. ‘Fake Plastic Snow’ goes a long way in cementing her as a fan favorite, if that hasn’t been accomplished already. She’s clearly a favorite of some script writers, some use her more than others, but she’s always greatly appreciated, even if her role is severely diminished later on in the series.

Betty struggles to find the right replacement for her so she can leave Mode to join Sofia's magazine, MYW in ‘Fake Plastic Snow’. Meanwhile, Hilda and Gina are at odds over the neighbourhood Christmas decorations, and Wilhelmina tries to stop Marc from revealing her secret.

A lot of Fake Plastic Snow suffers from the usual Henry/Walter drama, but other matters took hold and made this episode a nice diversion from the usual idiocy that is one of ‘Ugly Betty’s weakest story lines. Most prominently we learn that Betty’s role has already become invaluable, making any replacements redundant. After only a few months she’s become the crutch Daniel needs to survive, and their friendship has already become one of the greatest things about this show, if only it didn’t get so damn repetitive after this. Seeing them say goodbye to each other is sad, but you just know it’s not the end for them. Even if Betty leaves Mode, Daniel could never get by without her.

It makes sense that Amanda would be the one and only person who could come close to replacing Betty. She knows his, and despite what she may say, she’s a witty and resourceful woman who could keep Daniel afloat in Betty’s stead. There were a lot of amazing Amanda moments in this episode, but seeing her and Daniel coming to terms with their “arrangement”, even if it’s just a temporary fix, is nice.

Another part that I’ve always loved about ‘Fake Plastic Snow’ is Hilda and Gina’s truce, of sorts. They’ve been at odds with each other for so long, it’s nice to see them realize just how much they have in common, and begrudgingly accept each other’s presence in the other’s life. Even so, it’s great seeing them go at each other’s throats, especially when the results are as hilarious as they are here.

Fake Plastic Snow is another solid piece of the Ugly Betty puzzle, propelling the story forward with some great character moments along the way.

8/10

PS Can’t go without mentioning Christina’s hysterical Christmas list
“A heart for Wilhelmina, courage for Marc and brains for Amanda.”
