I think this is the first episode that bored me a little. There’s a rule book somewhere that trial based episodes always have to be tedious in some way, and this episode really took that to heart. It’s not necessarily a bad episode, and the writing is still strong, but against the backdrop of episodes that have set the bar so high, it’s hard not to see the flaws.
While it’s a solid idea to put Veronica’s talents to great use in a trial case that isn’t as open and shut as it first appears, the end result is mostly a dull overdrawn episode; the first ‘filler’ one in the whole 32 episodes so far. It starts out sound enough, but after the first few minutes begins to get complicated and without any faces to attach to the story it leaves the viewers interpretation up to names and what the jurors themselves have to say. I’m all for not having my intelligence insulted but I shouldn’t be straining to get to grips with a simple case like this one.
Maybe Keith’s work should have seen a bit more attention during this episode, since it was far more appealing than this week’s central one. Deputy Leo was always a sweet guy, and I’ve always thought that he was one of the best examples of how people can just get caught in the middle of other people’s drama. His actions were noble, so seeing him suffer the consequences was a little hard to take.
Despite some really heavy stuff going on with Meg and her death, Wallace’s long awaited return couldn’t have come at a better time. There’s so much negativity flying around in this episode, it was nice to see something go Veronica’s way. Here’s to a happy and hopefully less dramatic year for Veronica...maybe?
6/10
I think this is generally considered the worst episode. And I love Christmas episodes, too, so I remember being disappointed by how tedious it was.
