An episode like this was a necessity, especially at the beginning of the show’s run. ‘Ugly Betty’ is all about image, and this episode really embodies that all-important theme of staying true to who you are, no matter how much people put you down for it.
In ‘Queens for a Day’, struggling with her new position in the glitzy world of fashion, Betty attempts to improve her image by undergoing a makeover, but it backfires. Daniel has trouble securing a photographer for an important MODE fashion shoot.
Along with some wonderful moments of simple comedy, this episode went from light hearted, to truly affecting so easily. Just like she did in ‘The Box and the Bunny’ Betty continues to face such harsh criticism from her new co-workers. Willy putting Betty down in front of the MODE staff was one of the harshest and cruellest moments of the early episodes. It’s one of those moments when you want to jump straight through the screen and comfort Betty (and slap Wilhelmina).
Even though she has to put up with the constant jabs from the MODE staff, this episode is one which has a great payoff in the end. It’s Betty’s charm, and her ethnic heritage that save the day, and bag MODE one of New York’s most sought after photographers. The change she attempts to make isn't one that feels natural, so she returns to her original appearance, opting to wait until the time is right. Holding up under the scrutiny of the MODE staff, Betty is an icon for self belief and confidence, and no more so than in 'Queens for a Day'.
Despite one or two moments of pure annoyance in the form of Walter, ‘Queens for a Day’ is another classic Betty moment filled with the sweet trademark moments of Betty’s home life, and some wonderfully kooky situations in her work life.
9.5/10
