This is another favourite of mine. It blends both the humorous school mascot hunt, with the emotional and heavy scenes of Lianne and Veronica with such ease. Not only does it do both of those stories justice, but it also fills a few more holes and for yet another offering that fits a whole lot in, the way in which it’s tackled makes it feel like a breezy and perfectly crafted hour of television.
Mr Clemmons hires Veronica to track down the school mascot after it’s stolen in ‘Betty and Veronica’. She goes undercover as a student in Neptune’s rival school Pan High in order to deduce who may have taken Polly. The aftermath of Veronica and Lianne’s reunion is revealed.
Among other things, this episode follows up the tantalising ending to ‘Ruskie Business’ by adopting an equally terrific story telling tactic. The broken time line used in conjunction with the present day allows for both the story to move on beyond Veronica and Lianne’s meeting to her attempts to stop Weidman’s eavesdropping and it also features the kind of thing that makes ‘Veronica Mars’ such a delight to watch. The heaviness of the big conversation with Lianne plays off beautifully with the cute story of Veronica’s task of getting Polly back..
Her undercover plot to infiltrate Pan high was one of the best things about this episode, aside from the big mother/daughter encounter. It’s interesting that Neptune is so vastly different from a school that isn’t all that far from it, geographically. The episode explores that major difference in high school politics while also brilliantly milking the hilarity of the situation Veronica herself is in. One adorable side story of this whole thing was Veronica’s support of Wallace’s newfound status. Mostly we see Veronica tasking Wallace to aid her in her various endeavours, but here she takes the time to say how proud she is of him; it’s really sweet to watch.
Not only does the episode seem to deal with both these strong stories, but we’re also presented with more critical clues to what happened the night of Lilly’s murder courtesy of some handy flashbacks as Veronica listens to the stolen interrogation tapes. These trips back in time are brief yet filled with a ton of information to digest and add to the already rapidly growing pool of suspects and kick starting the final stretch of season one episodes.
Though some may view it as another standard outing, I always find myself quite impressed with this one and it always makes my list of favourites.
10/10
