Pretty Little Liars 3.09 The Kahn Game

If the point of this episode was to get to the truth, it wasn’t entirely successful. Though it played around with some interesting characters, and introduced a few new connections between them, there was very little about this episode that felt necessary.

I’ve always been a fan of Jenna and her weird attempts to circumvent the truth, so it’s cool that this episode put her in this direct position that forces her to come clean. Sure, it’s not the most threatening of scenarios, but a game of truths was a good idea in a show that’s all about lying and covering up the past. The truths actually divulged were a little jumbled, but there were a few tasty moments of cattiness in there, even from Noel, that made it seem more fun that is actually was.

Cece is a character that hasn’t really been explored enough. All we really know is that she’s a dead ringer for Ali, at least where mannerisms and bitchy attitudes are concerned, but do we know anything about her past? I liked her getting more screen-time this week, but other than a past fling with a Kahn boy, there was no new bits of scandal; we didn’t really get behind that defensive facade. If she’s going to continue to be a part of the show, I’m going to need more from her than that.

Paige was never anywhere near as right for Emily as Maya was, and that seems to be a popular opinion, but it’s great to see the writers use her as a way for Emily to get past losing Maya and move on from her, at least romantically. Paige lacks the spark that Maya had, but she’s an interesting personality to have around. And though we learned a lot about her during the show’s earlier episodes, like her strained relationship with her father, we haven’t seen much of her since. I think a few secrets from her past should be next on the show’s “big reveal” menu.

The Kahn Game was an episode that felt more like an opportunity to fill space, but there was enough here to keep it from becoming one of the show’s weakest episodes. But It would be nice for the show to get down and dirty with its mysteries, and pick up the pace before this first half of the season is up.

6/10
