Veronica Mars 3.17: Debasement Taps

This episode brings logic to this new formulaic approach to the series. Bolstered by an effective guest star, ‘Debasement Tapes’ is one of the better stand-alone episodes that closed out Veronica Mars.

As one dimensional as he is, I’m a huge fan of Paul Rudd. Horrendous music aside, ‘Debasement Tapes’ took a tired story and breathed some bit of life into it, filling it was hilarious twists, a breezy script and recurring faces.

That was one of the best parts of the series early on, those characters that used to fall in and out. When Veronica moved to college I was worried that the community we had grown accustomed to in the first two seasons would be forgotten. Partly that’s true, but that same sense of a small society constantly interacting fed through into the Hearts season, with people like Ratner coming back again and again.

It’s great to see Mac front and centre again, and as I’ve discussed before, it was a stroke of genius to get her together with Max. Keeping the supporting characters involved is important, and this episode did that surprisingly well. Even though some parts were fluffed out with the leftover Veronica/Piz/Logan drama, it succeeded, at least in part, at incorporating the show's new lease on life into its old one.

Even if it’s not as I had imagined it, I like seeing Keith as Sherriff here. That being said the show will definitely benefit from the hilarity that will ensure in Keith and Vinnie’s battle for the position as Sherriff. Surely Neptune will know they’re better off with Vinnie lurking in the background, duping jealous wives and partners? This might be fun.

7/10
