At this point Veronica Mars feels a little lost. Veronica is floating and and out of ever standard end of the school year plot that the series can find.
She's still sleuthy, lending her talents to solving another social injustice (see 'Un-American Gaffitti), though it can be hard to enjoy it when we've got a new external politic issue being flung at us at every opportunity. Unfortunatley, teh show is starting to feel like the series everyone thinks it is. Theres laughs and smart writing, but it feels repressed, like the show is being held back somehow.
That OC vibe is still ever present, no more so than in the massive attention being given to Logan and Mac’s love lives and all of the “what to do next summer” stuff. I get that they’re trying to get all the characters back into the fold, but there are a number of issues being skated past here, like the major emotional effect Parker’s rape must have had on her which never really got enough time to develop.
One thing that is finally being elaborated on is Dick’s buried guilt over his brother’s suicide which finally came to the surface in light of Big Dick’s return to Neptune. I think his outburst in front of his father is the first we’ve ever seen him verbally express any sort of emotional impact that his brother’s actions had on him since 'Welcome Wagon'. It’s a shame it’s never really spoken of again.
Keith’s troubles in the Sherriff’s office are the closest thing the series has to a major plot thread, and as much as I'm enjoying it all, I wish there was something juicier and darker to ground the series right now. Any bus crashes lately?
5/10
