Charmed 3.11 'Blinded By The Whitelighter'

‘Blinded By The Whitelighter’ is a great example of a demon of the week plot done right. There’s a lot at stake, it’s exciting and the demon is after a lot more than just random destruction.

Synopsis: The girls must stop a warlock named Eames from obtaining a whitelighters powers and killing all whitelighters in order to leave their witches vulnerable. Natalie, a friend and fellow whitelighter of Leo's, tries to help the girls to stop him, but has a few problems with the way they do things.

A lot of villains in Charmed tend to be on a simple quest: Smash kill destroy. This episode is an example of a great plan that actually gives the villain a bit of a brain and makes him a lot more of a threat. I always though Eames stood out as one of the better villains of the series. Villains shouldn’t be so one dimensional all the time. A bit of dark humour goes a long way in making them a lot scarier.

It’s also the first time when we get to see what it’s like ‘Up There’. I was pretty much against the idea of breaking the mystery of what it would be like. It’s a little disappointing they didn’t go for something a little more original rather than something as simple as what we got: white clouds and pillars. It’s kind of funny that they have staff meetings though.

Natalie was a cute way to make this episode a lot more fun. Her rule abiding personality clashing with the girls is great to watch. One thing I really noticed here is how different Prue has become. Here she’s officially one of the cooler sisters. Natalie’s death had just the right impact that it should have. Leo didn’t seem too broken up about it though, considering that they’ve been friends for a long time.

Most heroes and heroines usually succeed by breaking a few rules, like Sydney Bristow or Buffy Summers, and the Charmed Ones are no exceptions to this. What ends up saving the world is their braised attitudes and own unique plan. Their fu personalities and connection makes them powerful, not simply their powers themselves.

9/10
