iZombie 2.07: Abra Cadaver
While the previous two episodes focused on two major cases that tied intimately with this season’s major arcs, ‘Abra Cadaver’ takes a step back from that, and has a little more fun with something a little less serious.
iZombie 2.06: Max Wager
‘Max Wager’ cleverly ties multiple investigations into an important chapter in one of this season’s biggest plots, a plot that just happens to involve a number of key characters in Liv’s life. Things are about to get really complicated.
iZombie 2.05: Love & Basketball
After ingesting the brain of a man who always knew the right words to say to get people motivated, Liv was able to dish out some hard but galvanizing truths to Major in order to help him get out of his rut. Although, one might argue that she might not have been so gunho about helping the man if she knew what he was involved with elsewhere.
iZombie 2.18-19: Dead Beat/Salivation Army
iZombie 2.17: Reflections of the Way Liv Used to Be
What a year Major’s had. For what seems like the hundredth time, he’s in big trouble. Not even super positivity brain can help him now.
iZombie 2.16: Pour Some Sugar Zombie
iZombie 2.15: He Blinded Me...With Science
After trundling along at a decent and more than satisfying pace, ‘He Blinded Me...With Science’ descends into madness half way through, with several plots reaching crucial breaking points, with some resulting in harsh consequences.
iZombie 2.14: Eternal Sunshine of the Caffeinated Mind
There’s an incredible number of moving parts on iZombie right now. I know I sound like a broken record, but it’s to the series’ credit that all of those moving parts are churning out endlessly entertaining material each week. The previous few episodes benefitted from the case of the week tying into the serial arcs, with connections to Mr Boss and Blaine’s underground war, which helped to drive those stories forward. Although the case here is more segregated, there’s still a lot of progression to go around, and more than a few great gags to boot.
iZombie 2.13: The Whopper
While this season is still really exciting and propulsive in general, certain aspects of the different plot strands the show has cooking right now almost got a bit lost amongst the lies and deceit that permeated ‘The Whopper’. It’s a minor complaint, though, since this episode delivered in the emotional stakes by playing on one of the central themes of iZombie, while still delivering some great twists along the way.
iZombie 2.12: Physician, Heal Thy Selfie
Last week’s episode worked to bring this season’s plots together, but ‘Physician, Heal Thy Selfie’ put in overtime as we saw all of those plots colliding at full speed, with literally every arc that’s been in effect for the last few weeks in full swing.
iZombie 2.11: Fifty Shades of Grey Matter
There wasn’t much to report on the Veronica Mars cameo front, but I was so excited by what happened elsewhere that I wasn’t disappointed at all.
iZombie 2.10: Method Head
iZombie has always had a natural ability to poke fun at itself. When shows with ridiculous premises and plots take themselves too seriously, the audience fails to buy into what is so desperately being sold to them. The team behind iZombie seem to know this, and never has that self-aware approach to writing been so evident in any of the past 22 episodes than it was here.
iZombie 2.09: Cape Town
‘Cape Town’ pushes the limits of iZombie’s genre hopping abilities, and the results are a lot of fun.
iZombie 2.02: Zombie Bro
‘Zombie Bro’ was the funniest episode of iZombie so far. I’m not sure what that says about me. Maybe it means I’m a sucker for Frat Boy humour. Or maybe I’m more of a sucker for a well timed, sharply written drama, with just the right amount of silliness.
iZombie 2.01: Grumpy Old Liv
Given how dramatically last season ended, iZombie was going to face a challenge heading into this season. The show’s default kooky tone doesn’t necessarily mesh well with the dark conflicts that faced Liv when the credits rolled in ‘Blaine’s World’, at least not on paper. Back then it wasn’t a problem, because we were caught up in the build up to the blow out between Liv and Blaine, and the drama fit in with everything else that was going on. Now, as we go back to the familiarity of the standalone cases, I was a little worried the series would struggle with settling back into a more subdued routine in the face of all the ramifications of Liv’s big decision. Thankfully, ‘Grumpy Old Liv’ continued to highlight how well iZombie can jump between different extremes without distorting the show’s overall narrative.
