Charmed 4.01 'Charmed Again: Part 1'

And so begins the next chapter in the Charmed story. Part one of our deeply emotional season premiere sees Piper and Phoebe say goodbye to their big sister Prue, and meet their new half sister, Paige. This episode is actually brilliant.

Synopsis: Piper and Phoebe mourn the loss of their eldest sister Prue, but they soon discover the existence of a half sister named Paige who may make it possible to reconstitute the power of three.

Dealing with the loss of a major character while simultaneously introducing a new character can be a touch challenge, but Charmed handled it well. The memory of Prue wasn’t tarnished by Paige’s arrival; they both seemed to work together in a very nice way.

Most of this part focuses on how Phoebe and Piper deal with Prue’s death. Piper was always going to be the one hardest hit by Prue’s death. They were a lot closer than Phoebe and Prue in a way. They were together all that time while Phoebe was in New York, they rarely kept anything from each other, and they almost never fought. It’s pretty amazing that Holly almost lost a part of her too. Her best friend had been fired from the series, and now she had to go on without her.

It’s hard to take any of Phoebe’s sorrow seriously given the behind the scenes situation, but Alyssa does a terrific job never the less. She plays her role great; the sibling who never got along with her, but still loved her unconditionally.

Prue’s funeral is the saddest moment of Charmed. It was amazingly done, and it was the pivotal moment when we actually say goodbye to Prue and moments later, say hello to Paige. I liked that they had a ‘Wiccan’ funeral for her; it shows just how dedicated they are to the craft now.

Paige is obviously a little apprehensive at first, not knowing what in the hell she’s actually doing showing up at these random girls’ house. The episode does a great job of introducing her character. We learn that she used to be a little ‘off-the-rails’, drinking and partying so now she’s a lot more mellow, and cool headed. Her first meeting with the sisters (First after the funeral that is) at the manor is a fantastic moment, reuniting the power of three, where it all began.

A big chunk of this episode is a little ghost heavy but Patty and Grams’ appearance here was necessary though. How else would the long-winded story behind Paige be explained? This part actually worked so well for some reason. I couldn’t imagine their reactions being any different at the discovery of another baby sister, not long after the death of their big sister. That’s a lot to take in!

Cortez was super annoying, but there would obviously be a lot of questions if two people had been killed violently in your home. As unavoidable as it was, it was the most annoying part of the episode. Phoebe’s spell to get rid of him was kinda fun though; a small bit of humour in an otherwise dark episode.

Shax’s vanquish was a great end to the first part. They vanquish the demon directly responsible for Prue’s death, but now they have to go to the person who is really behind it; the Source.

9/10
