Charmed 4.15 'Marry-Go-Round'

‘Marry-Go-Round’ as an episode isn’t really one of my favourites. There is quite a bit being thrown around though and what it does do is set up the arc that follows this episode excellently.

Synopsis: On Phoebe’s wedding day Cole, now fully taken over by the Source, ties to ruin the ceremony in order to marry her in a dark ceremony.

When it comes to ‘Marry-go-round’ I usually don’t see it as a great episode when looked at on its own.  That is simply down to personal preference though because what this episode does is manage to move the story forward at a surprisingly quick pace. The second half of the season was rushed, but it actually gave the season a fantastic pace with very little filler moments in between.

Phoebe was totally unfair to Paige. Paige told her the dress was NOT her fault, but she still attacked her for it. She gave her a special cream (HER OWN INREDIENTS) to help calm her, and then Phoebe still thinks it’s her. Come on, it took far too long for her to realise what was going on don’t you think?

Still, it leads to some hilarious moments, like Millie Platt, and Phoebe going invisible (which was handled surprisingly well, they managed to balance the humour and the bleakness of Paige’s injury brilliantly). All this helps to balance out the darker elements on going through this hour, with the Seer and Cole plotting to ruin the ceremony, and have their own demonic one.

Their plan to lure the Charmed Ones to the cemetery chapel is a very elaborate, and if you think about it, there was very little chance of it working. Even so, the reveal of the Seer, or so they thought, being behind the whole thing is a hilariously crazy moment. Despite the flawed plan, the dark ceremony was so subtle that I don’t feel annoyed with anyone else not noticing what was going on.

Collio is an example of stunt casting done right. He actually worked hilariously well as a demonic threat.

As a stand-alone episode it doesn’t work as well as others (even though the story is far more stand-alone than other episodes in this particular arc) this season but put in as part of the overall season it acts as a great way to propel the story forward.

7.5/10

  1. Been way too long since I've seen this episode, so I have nothing to say there.

But, I loved your new header/banner image. I've actually never seen that picture before. :)

  2. I actually like this one a lot, mainly because of the silly wedding hijinks. Plus it sowed the seeds for The Fifth Halliwheel, which is really great.

  3. tvfan: Thanks! I found it recently, and really loved it.

maxpower: It did work fantastically as part of the arc, but it just isn't one of my favourites. That's my own personal taste though, really. But it really moved the story forward brilliantly.
