Charmed 4.16 'The Fifth Halliwell

This hour felt like one that could have been part of the earlier episodes solely because of the element of sisterhood that prevails during the hour. The greater plot is driven forward even more this episode, with Paige’s distrust coming to the forefront. This episode stands out as the perfect epitome of the story that has progressed this far.

Synopsis: (aka ‘The Fifth Halliwheel) Cole has Paige possessed by demonic power brokers when she catches him using his evil powers on an innocent.

Amongst other things, ‘The Fifth Halliwell’ highlights the fact that Paige has been a fifth wheel the whole season. Piper and Phoebe both have long term boyfriends, and other than Glen, Paige hasn’t had anything near as serious, meaning she can never really partake in all the ‘couply’ things that they do. Funnily, it’s something that Prue dealt with during the previous season, but it was never dealt with so directly.

Another thing that Paige inherited from Prue is her distrust of Cole. A lot of the time I think some of the plans for Prue were passed on to Paige in a way. Thankfully, that doesn’t really undermine the whole idea of this episode, or make Paige’s character appear uneven (at least not this season).

This episode features some brilliant sisterly moments, the first in a while, that stand out even among the brilliant demonic elements of the instalment. Seeing them hang out and have fun is something there hasn’t been much time for that this year, after all the drama that has enveloped all the previous episodes.

How easy healing makes things is evident here. Just like in ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ they have to turn to demons to help them save a sister. Alyssa is brilliant when Phoebe breaks down over the realization that Paige my die and she might lose another sister.

The demonic plot this episode is fantastic, and helps the story to move at a decent pace, but not move things along way too fast either. Watching Cole/the Source and his plan advance episode by episode is something that probably could have gone on for longer. It really shows what a strong character Cole is (was?) when he saves Paige. His love for Phoebe is still inside him.

The ending to this episode is another reason why I like it so much. Paige’s feelings of being on the outside make her so lonely sometimes. Piper, despite being the older sister, takes on her old role as middle child through this arc trying to keep peace between Phoebe and Paige for almost the same reason that she did between Phoebe and Prue.

9/10
