Charmed 4.19 'We're Off To See The Wizard'

The plot that has been driving the second part of the season forward finally comes to a head during this action packed episode that along with drama provided a lot of fun too.

Synopsis: Piper and Paige try to find a way to tell Phoebe about their suspicions about Cole. A wizard asks the sisters to help him stop the coronation of the new Source, unaware that it’s Cole.

Ok, I just have to start off by saying what an absolute delight Armin Shimerman was in this hour. His delightful banter with the girls was brilliant (especially with Piper), and he proved to be a formidable villain on top of it all. The idea of wizards popping up is an example of doing magical creatures right. Even if he never turned out to be evil, the way that it was approached in the first place makes it a lot better to accept that the shit we’re given during the later years. I loved the craziness while they tried to steal the Grimoire too; the show is really on point during these episodes.

The sisterhood is something that wasn’t neglected, despite all the craziness during this episode. Phoebe and Paige’s argument about Cole is so reminiscent of Prue and Phoebe’s relationship (like it was during the Fifth Halliwell), it almost makes me wonder if all this had been planned before Shannen left/was kicked off.

The moment of truth arrives when Cole’s betrayal of Phoebe is finally discovered. I don’t understand why her premonitions didn’t allow her to discover this sooner than it did. Regardless, it was amazingly done. Phoebe’s turn to evil is one of Charmed’s darkest moments along with the episode ending coronation. It’s this kind of thing that Charmed should have attempted to tackle during the next few years and gone even darker, rather than the lighter stuff that they did decide to go with in the end.

8.5/10

  1. The Source's magic was protecting Cole from Phoebe's premonitions, but when Cole became a stronger factor (with his happiness for Phoebe being pregnant, and his concern for her throwing fire) his love for Phoebe overpowered the Source, preventing his protection for a brief but powerful moment. The Seer mentioned in "The Three Faces of Phoebe" that he'd be protected from her premonitions (and Phoebe noted that she felt like a premonition was trying to get out during the episode), and The Seer mentioned right before he was discovered that if Cole's love get's any stronger it will overpower the Source. :)
