Ringer 1.03 'If You Ever Want A French Lesson...'

It’s always satisfying when a series starts to find its feet. This is especially applicable to Ringer which after two fun but messy weeks, stepped things up with its first great episode.

Synopsis: Bridget discovers something which leads her to believe her husband may be hiding something about her recent attack; Siobhan makes a surprising discovery; and Malcolm is kidnapped.

The first two episodes, as funnily imperfect as they were, didn’t seem to have a handle on balancing their many ongoing plots, though the party last week was bundles of fun. Here, however, the episode seemed to have a distinctly better flow to it than last two weeks did, and as a result, it became a lot less annoying to watch. Tying together Siobhan’s stalker with Bridget’s second confrontation with Agent Machado as her sister was one part which seemed to show more intelligence than the show had before.

I’m still in love with Bridget, who seems to be pulling herself together a lot better than she has before showing the seeds of a character who could easily become a great heroine after a while. The other characters seem to be showing a lot more depth, Andrew for example whose relationship with his wife is being explored in a wonderful way, and I really enjoyed Bridget discovering more about her sister's relationship with her husband bit by bit. One brilliantly disturbing scene was Malcolm being force fed hardcore drugs. It was such a non brutal scary form of torture that I found myself cringing a lot more than I did during the kicking and punching.

The best thing about this episode though was the great scenes we saw of Siobhan in Paris. She’s is undoubtedly the more interesting of the two sisters (not that Bridget is boring), and I massively enjoyed the increase in screen time she got here; one part in particular being her moment of realisation that she’s pregnant. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with the fact that Bridget isn’t pregnant and Siobhan is, perhaps when the time comes for Bridget to show and her sister to make a comeback. Though I hope that day doesn’t arrive too soon, because I’m dying to see what Siobhan is up to in Paris.

8/10

  1. Great review, like always. I didn't actually think the Malcolm subplot was hugely effective, since we don't know him all that well. It actually took reading an online review somewhere else to realize that they were injecting him with drugs since he's a former addict. That completely passed me by, heh.

And I agree about the pregnancy thing. But Bridget needs to resolve that fast. Either throw herself down some stairs and be all "oops, lost the baby", or actually sleep with Andrew. She should probably pursue the first one, since the latter is kind of icky at this point.

  2. I actually think they might go for a Terri Shuester/Bree Hodge and have her faking the whole thing for a while, but your idea makes things a lot easier!

They're going to have to deal with her and Andrew's intimacy soon I'd say, since things seem to be improving between them. I wonder how they'll approach it? Thanks for reading =)
