The Secret Circle 1.09 'Balcoin'

What a great way to end the first part of the series. This episode saw the resolution of one of ‘The Secret Circle’s biggest plotlines so far, and also dropped one huge bombshell on us in the final moments. Among other things, ‘Balcoin’ ensured that I will be enduring an agonizing wait until January.

In the mid-season finale ‘Balcoin’ Jake struggles with his mission to destroy the circle and his growing feelings for Cassie. Faye and Adam grow suspicious of Jake. Melissa’s cousin catches Diana’s eye.

Abduction is beginning to become a regular thing for the Chance Harbour kids. They should all invest in some top notch alarm system or something, it’s far too easy to get into that house, especially taking account of the power-less attributes of the perpetrators in question. Even so, this week’s instalment was pretty exciting, and the fallout from Jake’s exposure was great to watch unfold, though it could have done with a few more fireworks, it being such a major revelation and all. Like I said in the ‘Beneath’ review it needed to end this week or else it would drag out far too much. I’m glad that it wasn’t stretched to another episode of Adam desperately trying to prove his guilt, everyone found out nice and quick, and we saw that not only has his presence hurt Cassie, but it’s forever changed the circle.

Jane’s amnesia, a result of another sloppy cover-up by the two worst villains ever, Charles and Dawn, struck me as a sly way of letting out more about the history of the town bit by bit. A teasing comment now and then about all that had gone down with the other parents will help the season unfold nicely; good job writers! OK, so Charles and Dawn aren’t the worst, but they’re starting to sink a little bit in my eyes. I hope they start to do more in the back 13 episodes to give them a nice foothold in the story because so far all we’ve seen them do is run around making a mess of things. We need to know more about their strange motivations and allegiances.

Just as a certain other show has throttled us with more than one shocking discovery during its first season with regards the lineage of its female protagonist, ‘The Secret Circle’ uncovered it’s very own version of “John’s not your uncle, he’s your father” and it’s an even bigger bombshell. Not only is her father a descendant of a long line of evil witches, but it turns out he wasn’t wholly faithful to Amelia. Cassie has a sibling-and it’s someone we know!

OK, I guess the obvious option is Faye, since we already know that her Mom had a thing for Blackwell, but somehow I wouldn’t rule out any of the others, it could just as easily be Melissa, or Diana (maybe Charles isn’t her biological father). Faye being a descendant of dark magic opens up a whole other kettle of fish too, especially with her proclivity to all things crazy. Even if Cassie can learn to control what’s inside her, Faye will almost certainly face a much tougher challenge in that respect; so many exciting possibilities!

Regardless of where they eventually decide to go with this major discovery, 'Balcoin’ was a great way to end its successful first run and I’m seriously excited for ‘The Secret Circle’s triumphant return in January.

8.5/10
