Veronica Mars 1.04 'The Wrath of Con'

Episodes like this one are sometimes where 'Veronica Mars' falters slightly. Flashback heavy episodes have a tendency to get a little tedious and overdone, especially if they’re not focused on the season’s main exposition plot. ‘The Wrath of Con’ is certainly not one of them. While the flashbacks here don’t give us any new clues about her murder, they give the viewer an invaluable insight into Lily as a person and help us to understand why Veronica valued their friendship so much.

In ‘The Wrath of Con’ Veronica helps Wallace’s friend Georgia (Kayla Pratt) after she is conned out of $6000. When Troy asks her to the homecoming dance, Veronica begins to reminisce about her last homecoming experience, when Lily was alive. Logan puts together a tribute video of Lily for her upcoming memorial.

While we’ve seen the variety of ways in which Lily’s death changed both Veronica’s life and Veronica’s world perception, up until now we haven’t seen much of Lily as a person. Even though the flashbacks here don’t paint us a picture of a truly inspirational young girl, they do give us an indication as to just why Veronica misses her so much, and why she looked up to her for so long. We spend the greater part of a year trying to get justice for her death so it’s important to know exactly why we’re doing it in the first place. I really loved how these flashbacks tied in with the present day and Veronica’s invitation to homecoming. Her tribute to Lily, though quite strange, was a sweet way for us to see how much Veronica still values Lily’s friendship, even if she did hold her back.

As for our sleuthing this week, I think Veronica’s take-down of Grant and Liam is one of my favourites of the series, if solely based on the high amount of wit and intelligence she displays during the whole thing, and it’s great when Keith gets involved, even if it’s only momentarily. His relationship with Veronica is quite strange if you think about it, how many fathers would be willing to go out and lie for their daughter?  Though I love Wallace and the moral ground he remains in for most of his time in the series, this episode doesn’t really tell us much about him and his involvement here is mostly just an excuse to give Kayla Pratt a more significant role than other people Veronica helps.

This episode manages to make use of all that the series has going for it, while not overshadowing all the subtleties that it possesses.

9.5/10
