Veronica Mars 1.07 'The Girl Next Door'

“Are some things better left buried?” Such is the question that is raised during this episode, which examines the harsh consequences of uncovering the truth, something Veronica is honour bound to do. While presenting us with a story that has a pretty intense outcome, it also has some fun with characters whose interactions will become a major recurrence in the series.

In ‘The Girl Next Door’ Veronica starts to worry when her pregnant neighbour goes missing, and sets out to help track her down. Logan and Weevil land in detention and pair up to give their teacher a taste of his own medicine.

While finding out the truth is always considered the right thing to do, sometimes it can have major repercussions and can make some situations worse than when they started. Veronica is all about finding out the truth, and not just because of her Dad’s profession, but because she craves it. ‘The Girl Next Door’ is the series token example of how much the truth can ruin people’s lives. It can always be argued that people deserve to know what others have done behind their backs, but in some cases it can lead to greater pain and heartbreak that one might realize and this episode explored that wonderfully.

Logan and Weevil always end up at odds with each other during Veronica Mars’s three seasons. It’s no surprise that the writers threw them into several situations together, since it’s pretty obvious just how well they play off each other. Even though it’s easy to point out the major differences between them, it’s also worth pointing out just how similar they bother are too; and not just because of the love they both shared for Lilly. I quite enjoyed watching their secret plot against Mr Daniels, and despite their hatred for one another, it's easy to see how much mutual respect actually exists between the two of them.

Some of the flashbacks here were a little unnecessary and distracted somewhat from the big reveal of Jake and Lianne’s high school romance, but it’s still yet another decent episode.

8.5/10
