Charmed 5.11 'The Importance of Being Phoebe'

An episode I really should hate, ‘The Importance of Being Phoebe’ is actually lots of fun, although the girls have to be pretty moronic not to notice a Phoebe imposter at this stage. The Cole arc is about to reach its climax, and this episode is all about preparing us for his inevitable exit from the Charmed Ones’ lives.

In ‘The Importance of Being Phoebe’ Cole plans to take in the Nexus under the manor in order to take back his throne. In order to keep them distracted, Cole causes Phoebe to get suspended, Paige to get in a car accident and Pipers club to fail inspection. When Phoebe discovers his plan, he takes her prisoner and sends a shape shifting demon in her place.

The demon imposter posing as one of the sisters is something that has been done quite a lot, and while, yes, previous attempts have been far more successful, this time was still pretty entertaining. It’s still amazing to see just how long it takes the girls to cop on that it’s not their own sister, especially as the show is based on how close they all are. This part of the episode got a little convoluted and over the top as it went on, but it was still fun to watch, which is great to say considering the stuff they churn out later on that isn't even fun, it's just atrocious.

Phoebe’s now complete indifference to Cole is quite painful to see addressed like this. There was always a sense of him being in the bottom of her heart, buried under hate but this episode was the kick in the teeth that really sent Cole over the edge. Considering how mind-numbingly irritating Phoebe has been lately, Cole's behaviour hasn't given her much of a choice but to remove her from her heart completely. Alyssa and Julian’s chemistry is still ever present, and lights up the screen, even when they’re supposed to hate each other the feeling that they were once passionately involved is obvious.

It wasn’t the most mind-blowing, but the idea of distracting the girls by legal troubles, is an interesting one and brings something new to the mix. Cole’s fun side is great to see, and it’s a shame they didn’t make more use of it in a few more episodes, like they have these past few weeks. They made some nice use of the different stories coming together, but outright silliness took over a number of times during the episode.

With Cole now completely separated from the sisters and any sense of loyalty shattered, things have been set up quite well for his big exit that follows this one.

7.5/10
