Ugly Betty 1.04 'Swag'

Betty makes tremendous sacrifices in the name of love, especially when it comes to her family. Look at what she’s put through on a daily basis, from the torture to the sadistic comments, she puts up with it in order to follow her dream, but in this episode she gives up what could be her ticket to the inner world of fashion to save her father. It speaks volumes for the wonderful and caring girl that we’re just getting to know.

After being cut off by his father, Daniel struggles to entertain a high maintenance client in ‘Swag’. Betty and her family struggle to come up with the cash to pay for Ignacio’s medication. Wilhelmina struggles to hide her shady expenses from the Meade financial staff.

Betty’s connection to her dearly departed mother is part of what makes her one of the most caring of the Suarez family. Just like her father, Betty’s life is dedicated to taking care of her family, with her dreams coming second. Obviously, she takes the time to focus on herself in later seasons, but considering the troubles her family have been facing, she takes the highly sought after handbag that any other MODE girl would kill for, just to get her father’s medicine.

The show continues to avoid taking itself too seriously, with this episode’s attempts at highlighting the hugely entertaining hijinks that encompass Betty’s work life and her strong friendship with Daniel. Once again, Betty saves Daniel’s ass, and continues to make strides in changing her scrutinising new position. Her selling the knockoff bag to Mark without him knowing is undoubtedly hilarious, but the episode is another one that uses the shows message in a different but unique way.

  1. I'm reading your Betty reviews Panda but really don't have much to say as I've forgotten the details. Nevertheless, a joy to read as always. I miss this show so much! It was such a high profile beast of a show in its first year and then the hype just fizzled out! Ugh.
