Charmed 1.02 'I've Got You Under My Skin'

After the high standards set by the opening episode, this one felt like a step down. The acting and the demonic plot were sub par at best. It did give us a bit more of an idea about our characters though, which is probably its saving grace.

Synopsis: In the second episode Phoebe meets a photographer from New York, who just happens to be the demon Javna who steals young girls’ youth to stay young and Piper deals with the spiritual ramifications of becoming a powerful witch.

Piper, especially in the early seasons, was always the more sensitive Halliwell. For that reason I think a lot of people really liked her. This episode really highlighted this, giving us one of the girls’ first moral dilemmas with regards to their magic. Piper is obviously the one who would be the hardest hit by the discovery of evil within her. The theory that witchcraft is evil and witches being burnt are things that have been done a lot, but as a show about witches, it’s something that couldn’t be avoided. Having it so early on, helped get it out of the way, and get on learning more about their powers and less about being good or evil.

Phoebe and Prue followed their usual paths. Prue was work focused in this episode and we saw how ambitious she is when it comes to her career, when she demands a position at the auction house. Phoebe had her first altercation with personal gain. Her attempt to use her powers for something so fun and frivolous is just so typical Phoebe that it made me a little sad that she lost of lot of her spark after a while.

The reason I hate the Javna plot is probably because it ages so badly. From the makeup, the acting and the music it just all looks rather terrible and cheesy.  It’s probably what brought this episode down.

4.5/10
