Charmed 3.01 'The Honeymoon's Over'

‘The Honeymoon’s Over’ failed to live up to the great premiere at the start of the second season. Still, with a fun demon fight, and fantastic new character it set up the great arcs that would become so important for the rest of the season.

Synopsis: Prue and Phoebe must protect Darryl from demons known as Guardians while Piper and Leo are still ‘Up There’. Phoebe meets ADA Cole, who has a secret of his own. Leo comes up with a solution to his and Piper’s forbidden romance.

Cole was always far more complex than a lot of other characters on Charmed. The idea of adding someone so tortured with a history like his was a good move, even if it wasn’t supported by Burge herself. Many people agree with her and think that his introduction messed a little with the sisterly bond that this show is based on, but I feel it just added another layer to it, and tested its strength. Alyssa and Julian had great chemistry from the start, and along with Piper and Leo, they stand out as the best pairing of the series if not better.

Piper and Leo’s romance is another important element of the season, and this episode does a good job of introducing what they will have to do in order to stay together. Even though his proposal was rushed, it was still a great moment, and Piper’s acceptance was even more special.

Phoebe’s new power pops up here. Its relevance was never really explained, seeing as how their powers were always supposed to develop not grow at random, something Prue had even said before. It provided a lot more fun for Phoebe though, who developed her first active power, something she got a taste for in the season 2 finale.

The demonic part of this episode is good enough but for a season premiere, it should really have been far stronger than it was. Still the fun fight scene helped keep things somewhat entertaining.

7/10

  1. Actually, "The Honeymoon's Over" is my favorite season premiere. Unlike many other fans of "CHARMED", I agree that Cole Turner was one of the best additions to the series. It's a pity that they screwed up his storyline in S5.
