Charmed 4.03 'Hell Hath No Fury'

Piper was always going to be the hardest hit by Prue’s death. This episode explores that while also establishing the new dynamic with some fun results.

Synopsis: After fighting a group of demonic creatures who punish wrong doers, Piper is inadvertently turned into one herself. Paige steals the Book of Shadows to perform spells on her co-workers, but it backfires.

Piper and Prue always seemed to have a much more different relationship than Phoebe and Prue did. It’s not that there wasn’t as close a bond or that she didn’t love her as much, but Piper always seemed to follow Prue, while Phoebe always did her own thing. It was obvious that Phoebe relied on Prue a lot less.

So Piper’s anger at her death is not surprising. I really love her breakdown at Prue’s grave. Her anger is so refreshing in comparison with the usual sobbing and praise that you hear when someone dies. Piper has the right to be angry at Prue leaving her and her sisters alone and leaving her in charge. It’s here that I realised that Prue’s departure really allowed Piper to really grow as a character (not that I’m glad Prue left). Holly’s performance is so brilliant during this part. She really became the standout in the series after Shannen left.

The furies reminded me a lot of the Banshee during the third season, in that it was utilised in order to allow one of our characters to deal with an emotional crisis. Still, I really enjoyed the Banshee a lot more as a demonic threat, than I did the furies. It’s Piper’s breakdown that makes this one so dramatic.

Paige, coming into the fun a little late, obviously would want to try out some of the spells for herself. I know if I was presented with a book which had every which way to punish people I hated, I would definitely try it! I like that she learned her lesson about personal gain just like Phoebe (the then youngest sister) did years before. She really fits right into the youngest sister role so easily.

The new dynamic is really evident here. Phoebe, always the baby, is now the middle and as a result, what holds the group together, now helping keep peace between Piper and Paige. Paige is obviously the youngest now, and her fun side really makes that obvious. Piper, obviously having trouble with Prue’s death, would find it hard to step into her role right away and accepting Paige into the family.

It deals with a lot of necessary stuff, but ‘Hell Hath No Fury’ is a stone’s throw away from amazing. It’s simply great.

8.5/10
