While this hour delves back into something that I adored the last time it dealt with it, this exploration of past lives isn’t as wonderful as the last time. The sisterly moments helped it along the way though.
Synopsis: When Paige finds a spell from a fairytale in the Book of Shadows she accidentally summons a prince. When Piper and Phoebe realise that it may have been her past life her past self returns to take the prince back.
In season 2’s ‘Pardon My Past’, when we saw Phoebe’s past life, it turned into a personal favourite. Here, however, for some reason I found it difficult to get into. I’m not sure if it was the medieval thing (which can be seriously annoying) or just the story itself, but I couldn’t like it as much as I should have.
One thing I do like is that Paige’s past life was in some way a reverse evolution of her character. She had all the same traits (stubborn, independent) but wasn’t the same (since Paige grew as a person). Paige’s independence from the sisterhood is something recurs a lot during the next few years. Though it can make her look a little selfish at times, it shouldn’t be forgotten that she only just found out that she had sisters very recently, she’s used to doing things her way. I would also like to point out how fabulous Rose was as the enchantress, she does the whole evil bitch thing so well!
Glenn makes the first of his appearances in this episode. I always liked the idea of him and Paige since they suited each other so well. It was a cute little way to learn more about what Paige is like too, since she used to be such a ‘wild child’ before. It’s nice that she considers the power of three a responsibility to stay around for; at least she takes it seriously if nothing else.
Obviously the show can’t have Paige running around somewhere else for the next few years; she’ll have to move in with her sisters at some point. Why Paige was so bitchy about the whole thing I don’t know. Piper and Phoebe were living without electricity for God’s sake. In this day and age (and also back in 2001) that’s next to impossible. There was the demon too of course... She was pretty stubborn about it just solely to make a point.
I liked Piper taking Prue’s jacket from her room. It’s such a small but significant thing which sort of sees her accept her new role as big sister and step into Prue’s shoes, she’s such a trooper. The fact that Piper and Phoebe can accept Paige into their home, not just for magical reasons, goes a long way in showing just how accepting they’ve been of her, and how close they’ve become in such a short time.
7/10
