Charmed 5.01 'A Witch's Tail: Part 1'

‘A Witch’s Tail’ starts off Charmed’s fifth season by immediately introducing the new fun vibe that the producers decided to adopt. While the main Disney story is a little distracting, there are a quite a few decent moments in here to make it a somewhat enjoyable premiere.

In the first part of ‘A Witch’s Tail’ the girls come to the aid of a mermaid who has made a pact with the evil sea hag in order to become human. Piper has trouble fighting evil and being pregnant. Phoebe’s freedom from Cole is short lived.

The main story revolving around Piper, Phoebe and Paige helping Mylie find true love is a little gag worthy, and is in some ways a little forced, but it certainly had a number of entertaining tid-bits. A mermaid’s heart being cold and empty is surprisingly dark for such a light story and it was a great tool to helps us to understand Phoebe’s new desire to be free of Cole; since he ruined her human life, she turned to the cold ocean to escape. Most of this isn’t explored till part two though and we’re subjected to a lot of true love crap for most of this half.

Mostly Phoebe was unlikeable during this hour. I liked that she became successful in her work life. She had changed a lot over the past two years, and becoming a successful career woman gave her a new goal in life and Cole coming back is frustrating, sure, but why is he such a b*stard if all he did was reply to her ad in the paper? His time as the Source was never really explained to the girls and it ruined the way in which fans had grown to love the idea of Phoebe with Cole. Their romance could never have ended well, but it definitely didn’t deserve to be ruined by the attitude shift Phoebe suddenly adopts.

The powers he gained in order to come back to Phoebe are probably the main reason why he never had a chance with her and it seems like he was only really blamed for what happened as a result of him being tricked, not what he himself did. His powers, though of a demonic nature, aren’t from a demonic side of him. As far as I could see, he was essentially the same, just with a few more powers than normal.

It was annoying at times, but Piper’s fears of demonic attacks were a sweet way of exploring her newfound desire to give her baby the childhood she never got since her mother wasn’t a major part of hers. Even if it was a little weird to see the sister who was always so brazen in the face of impending danger chicken out completely, it was nice to see her pregnancy alter her mindset since it’s something that a lot of expectant mothers go through.

7.5/10
