This episode felt like the perfect way to end the first chapter of the ‘Once Upon a Time’ story. It raised the stakes, revealed some secrets, and ended in truly heart-breaking fashion.
The story of the huntsman is revealed in ‘The Heart is a Lonely Hunter’. When Sherriff Graham begins to see flashbacks oh his former life, he turns to Emma and Henry for help in discovering who he really is, but Regina tries to stop him before he discovers the truth.
It’d be nice if I was shocked at the outcome of this episode, it being such a huge twist and all, but the truth is I wasn’t. Not only because of the constant advertising which indicated that someone would be biting the dust, but because the episode only felt like it was heading one place.
That didn’t affect my enjoyment of this episode any, which was well up to snuff with the rest of the season thus far, pulling an amazing flashback, and amazing episode out of the bag. The story-telling methods I talked about in the ‘That Still Small Voice’ review were utilised brilliantly during this episode. Not only did they weave together beautifully, but they told the story in such an intelligent and well crafted way.
As evil as she is, there’s always been some part of me that feels sorry for Regina. Sure, she’s the one responsible for the position all of these characters are in now, but she’s also lost a lot, and had to sacrifice more than any of the others ever had. This episode, though, really cemented her as a truly despicable woman, who will stop at nothing to get her final revenge, and it was done amazingly.
I’ve really enjoyed these first 7 episodes, and while I’d like to see a bit more history being divulged, for the most part the story is unfolding at a steady, but confident pace, and is setting the series up for a wonderful first season.
9/10
