Veronica Mars 1.14 'Mars vs. Mars'

I think the writers’ main intention behind this episode was the idea of having Veronica and Keith fighting on opposite corners but the fact is though that this idea got overshadowed by the greater story that they become part of. While I enjoy the less serious cases that revolve around Neptune High, like ‘Clash of the Tritons’, it was really evident here that the show could easily run with a far more serious one and still do it with style.

Keith and Veronica go against one another  in ‘Mars vs. Mars’ when Veronica tries to protect her favourite teacher Mr Rooks (Adam Scott) when he faces allegations of statutory rape by student Carrie Bishop (Leighton Meester).

Veronica and Keith’s rivalry here, though it’s great to watch, doesn’t quite make this episode what it is. Veronica has always found herself fighting for what she thinks is right, and while she ends up revealing someone’s lies in the end, the way it plays out is quite different than she would have hoped, and she ends up uncovering the true victim in all of it. The different twists during this episode made this case a far more entertaining one than, for example, the previous episode’s one.

Lynn’s death is the main catalyst in throwing Veronica and Logan together, and we see a lot more of them working together during this episode than we’ve seen in a long time. Seeing him discover she may in fact be dead, but then realise there is still some hope she’s alive are such extremes that I think on a lesser character wouldn’t have made as much of an impact as they did. These short scenes did a great job in getting the story to where it needed to be for the brilliant episode that follows this one.

The final scene with Abel was a very intelligent way of marking the turnaround of Veronica's investigation into Lilly’s murder, and cleverly mirrors their previous meeting. We’ve hit a the crucial half-way point in her big quest to discovering the truth, and it goes without saying that it’s been a superbly crafted mystery so far.

8.5/10
