Charmed 1.04 'Dead Man Dating'

One might mistake this episode for just a boring, thrill less hour. I’m not one of those people. This is an episode that truly shows just how much the writers cared for the characters in the beginning, giving us more of a taste of, not just Piper’s but, the three sisters’ personalities.

Synopsis: Piper meets a ghost Mark, who was killed in order to fake another man’s death. Meanwhile Prue finds out a secret about Andy, and Phoebe gets a job to buy Prue a birthday gift.

This episode is pretty Piper centric. Her sensitive caring personal comes into play in a big way here, and we see just what people mean when they say she’s the heart of the show. Holly's performance is particularly great here. Her personality fit so well with Mark’s, and I actually found myself upset about his death, despite the fact that their relationship only lasted 20 minutes.

This is one of those episodes that had fun with the fact that Phoebe is a bit of a wild card, with her taking a job as a hotel psychic. It paid off, and her little act of bravery showed us just how great she was in the beginning. Prue’s refusal to celebrate her birthday fits in with her attitude with the majority of the season; a bit of a bore. Her reaction to seeing Andy and his ex-wife is also something that made me even more irritated with the eldest Halliwell. Her straight out refusal to find out who this woman actually was and why Andy was with her makes her even more infuriating.

It wasn’t the most exciting episode though, not featuring anything too flashy other than Piper’s abduction. But it worked well with the ghost story, and we ended up with a very sad, but satisfying ending. It’s not a classic, but still a standout in the batch of iffy first episodes.

7.5/10
