Following on from the previous episode which was hugely character based, ‘Dream Sorcerer’ shifts things back into more magical territory with an episode that was surprisingly frightening and featured some great comedic moments.
Synopsis: Prue must fight off the attacks of the Dream Sorcerer, a man who kills women in their dreams. Phoebe and Piper cast a spell to attract men, but it doesn't turn out as well for them as they hoped.
This episode is by no means the terrible episode people make it out to be. It featured some heavy screen time for Prue, and her workaholic personality really comes into play here. What keeps the episode afloat is the hilarity that ensues after Phoebe and Piper’s love spell. It’s something I missed in the later years, when the girls had a little more fun with magic. Here it really works, and paints Piper and Phoebe as realistic young girls who would obviously be tempted by their magical gifts.
The dream sorcerer himself, despite not being demonic, actually came across as one of the more threatening enemies they have faced. It’s a horrible feeling, not being in control, and the episode conveyed just how scary it can be when you find you’re about to die, with almost no way to stop it. Dreams are so personal and to find someone invade them like that is quite disturbing. I know some people find Schulze’s performance a bit over the top, but personally I think it was just as weird as it needed to be.
‘Dream Sorcerer’ was a good episode, but not quite great just yet.
6/10
