The Charmed circle is so tight, and the show is based on how close all three sisters are, so an episode which features someone trying to infiltrate that circle was inevitable. Still, as significant an idea that it was, the episode was pretty average with few significant moments.
Synopsis: The sisters meet Aviva who, by request of a demon, attempts to befriend them in order to become a part of their coven. Piper and Phoebe fight over Leo’s affections.
The best part of ‘The Fourth Sister’ is fun interaction between Piper and Phoebe and their sibling rivalry over Leo, who makes his first major appearance here (side note: how much did Brian Krause age just in the first 3 years of the show? Crazy). Phoebe’s fun side is something that really made me love her in the first few seasons, and it’s something that she lost as the show progressed, making her far less likeable.
Prue’s role as big sister really came into play here. Sure, she was completely right not to trust Aviva, she DID force her way into their house, and kidnap their cat, but somehow she was just completely annoying and bossy. It’s her narrow mindedness that really gets to me. We also saw her first significant bump in her relationship with Andy with her secret life getting in the way. It’s hard not to feel for both of them here though.
The demon orchestrating the whole thing wasn’t what dragged this episode down, it was Aviva herself. The main issue with her was how naive she was. How could she believe that a good witch would really want her to force her way into a group of sisters, and kill one of them in the process. Her attempt on Prue’s life was quickly forgiven, something which I found particularly insane, I mean she tried to kill their sister for God’s sake!
‘The Fourth Sister’ could have been a standout if executed properly. Piper and Phoebe’s fun rivalry really helped it along the way though.
6/10
