‘The Witch is Back’ saw their girls finally coming face to face with the woman responsible for their birthright, Melinda Warren. It was also first episode that featured someone being brought back from the dead, as a fully function human, ghost or otherwise, something that happens a bit too much as the show progresses. This episode had the makings of an amazing episode, but never reached its true potential.
Synopsis: When Prue opens a locket, freeing a powerful warlock, they sisters cast a spell to summon their ancestor Melinda Warren to find a way to stop him.
We saw here just how much Prue’s magical issues were really affecting Andy. His anger at her refusal to tell him anything that’s going on is understandable and I almost feel quite sorry for him, after all, he’s just trying to do his job, and here Prue is, getting in the way, again.
Melinda Warren was pretty much as you’d expect her. She wasn’t the most fascinating woman, but her strength and power, particularly for a woman from her time, is admirable and obviously something that carried down through the family. It was cute seeing her react to all the new things around her and fun watching the girls around her too. This was their first chance to talk so someone in their family about being witches, and it made them feel a little less alone.
This was also the first episode that Rex and Hanna really made a play to kill the sisters, after 7 episodes of making sly, not very scary, comments. The warlock himself was pretty standard, and it’s a shame more wasn’t said about his and Melina’s past romance.
It was a story that had to be done sooner or later, and it did give us a fun enough hour, but the potential that was ignored let it down a bit.
7/10
