This episode takes things away from demons with a more human threat, but it still doesn’t make it anything above average. We see very little in regards to the girls themselves and their magic. We do finally find out about the existence of whitelighters though.
Synopsis: After receiving a cry for help, Prue finds out that a young male witch has been kidnapped, and his abductors are using his power for crime. Phoebe discovers what Leo really is.
This is the first episode that deals with a properly human threat, something that the dream sorcerer had a little of, but not to the same extent. It left me feeling a little underwhelmed as far as good episodes go. Max was another example of poor casting. His chemistry with his father and Prue was almost non-existent. It was Shannen’s performance that led this episode into bearable territory. Prue, again, shows a lot more vulnerability. It was at this point that I really began to like her.
When it comes to Leo, I don’t really see him as a particularly amazing character. Like Andy and Darryl, he serves his purpose, but he never really did anything particularly interesting, especially in the earlier seasons. In ‘Secrets and Guys’, we discover what he actually is. I liked that there was an air of mystery about him here, it got too straight forward with a simple “I’ll go check with the Elders” and they know all they need to know.
This episode saw the introduction of something that would become a major part of the series: healing. While, yes, it took away the entertainment of seeing one of the sisters hurt, since we knew they would be ok once Leo got there, it allowed the stakes to be raised giving the writers a lot more opportunities for better stories.
This episode falls into the realm of boring, but it wasn’t truly awful.
5/10
