Charmed 1.15 'Is There A Woogy In The House?'

Phoebe becomes the second of the sisters to turn evil in this episode. It had some great historic back story, and showed how great the mythology in the first season really was.

Synopsis: After an earthquake strikes, a shadow trapped beneath the Halliwell manor is freed and possesses Phoebe. After taking over the house it forces Prue and Piper to search for a way to save her.  Prue’s boss asks her to host a dinner party for a major client at the manor.

Phoebe’s proximity to evil was such a huge part of the show, particularly in season 3 and 4. The theory had so much potential to be explored even further and could have led to some AMAZING storytelling, but sadly nothing like that ever materialised after season 4. This episode, gives us a small insight into that part of her.

Phoebe, being born in the Halliwell manor, is like the manor itself. When in the hands of good magic, it protects them, but when in the hands of evil, it becomes quite a powerful opposing force. Such an idea is very clever, a little bit more than I would have thought Charmed was capable of. The idea of the manor being in a spiritual nexus is a good one, and something that was mentioned quite a few times during other seasons.

Prue and Piper were always such a good pairing. One thing that I thought the show could have done more is put them together. Season 3 tends to do that a lot more (probably to separate Alyssa and Shannen more than anything else), and it worked out so well.

The ‘bring the boss home’ idea really worked here, despite being a tried and tested formula on many occasions. Charmed’s take resulted in some fun moments.

9.5/10
