Charmed 1.21 'Love Hurts'

Darklighters make their first appearance in an episode that is pretty standard if you’re not a fan of the Piper Leo romance. What really makes this such a great episode is the big switch of the girls’ powers.

Synopsis: After Leo orbs into the manor wounded after saving one of his charges, Piper casts a spell to switch their powers so she can heal him also causing Prue and Phoebe to switch powers in the process. They must find a way to save their innocent while figuring out how to control each others powers.

Piper’s desperation to save Leo here is really what made me love them as a couple. There wasn’t really a whole lot of screen-time here to make us care enough about Leo himself, but seeing Piper so distraught is probably what made this episode such an emotional one.

The power switching episode was bound to happen sooner or later. Prue and Phoebe’s powers are almost polar opposites, Phoebe’s being the most passive and Prue’s being the stronger of the two active powers so they were naturally the most obvious ones to switch. Watching them at such odds was a simple but effective idea, and pretty fun to watch.

Darklighters are one of the bigger demonic threats, being the only ones who can actually harm whitelighters. Certain elements about darklighters became lost in later episodes; darklighters became more about solely destroying whitelighters, rather than serve another purpose.

If you’re not someone who loved seeing Piper and Leo together, this could be a pretty boring episode. I am, so it’s not. Still, it’s the power switching that made it so fun, not the other elements of the story.

8/10
