Charmed 2.21 'Apocalypse Not'

Like ‘Morality Bites’ which taught the sisters that they can’t use their powers to punish wrong doers, ‘Apocolypse Not’ teaches them that they can’t selfishly choose their sister’s life over everyone elses. It’s not as powerful as the former episode, but it’s quite close.

Synopsis: Piper and Phoebe accidentally send Prue and one of their enemies to another plane. They must work with the demons they were facing in order to get them back.

There was a lot at risk during ‘Apocalypse Not’ since this time it was quite obviously the entire world that was at risk, something that was never at stake (at least not that it was mentioned so directly). The Four Horsemen are an idea that almost everyone knows, and Charmed put a clever modern twist to them. They also had to find a way to bring back their sister who was taken by their spell (Shannen robably needed the time to prepare for directing the finale, just like in season 3’s penultimate episode).

Like ‘Morality Bites’, the lesson the sisters had to learn this time around is that they can’t sacrifice the world in order to save their sister. It’s sad to think that they always have to put everyone else’s needs before their own, and their own loved ones.  The ‘Save a sibling or 5 strangers’ line was a clever way to represent a ‘lesson learned’ at the close of the hour.

Again, Phoebe’s dark side is mentioned. It’s become quite known by this point that Phoebe has a darker part to her than the other sisters. The scenes with her and strife were cleverly done, and showed just how much Phoebe is allured by the dark side.

‘Apocalypse Not’ was closer to a big finale than the following ‘Be Careful What You Witch For’.

9/10
