‘Primrose Empath’ is so fantastic because of a number of things. Shannen’s mind-blowing performance, the little bit of fun it had, and the strong emotive side that it deals with.
Synopsis: Prue accidentally frees a demon and becomes an empathy allowing her to hear others thoughts. But when it begins to cause her to deteriorate, Phoebe and Piper have to turn to the empathy who originally cursed the demon to help her.
Although the episode has an all too familiar idea, it actually ended up being one of the greatest episodes of the season. Bearing the burden of everyone else’s’ thoughts must be incredibly defeating. Shannen pulls an incredible performance out of the bag for this episode, I think the basement scene is when I really thought she was one of the greatest TV actresses out there.
They played around with the empathy idea in such a great way too. The start of the episode had a little fun with it (bum pinching), while the rest deals with the obvious seriousness of the affliction. Prue’s ability to stand up and channel the pain into her power was another reason that made her such a strong character.
Phoebe and Cole finally sleep together. I always liked the idea of them, and I think I really started to love them here. Prue feeling Cole’s love for her really turned the story around, especially after we see his decision to skip town just to avoid seeing Phoebe in pain.
Again, Leo and Piper’s little couple dilemmas are a small little part of the episode. I really feel sorry for Leo. He has to find a way to fit into Piper’s life while putting on a front that he’s normal. He can never earn money like a normal human being, and can’t be the gentleman he was raised to be.
‘Primrose Empath’ is another standout of the shows strongest season.
9/10
