The Secret Circle 1.06 'Wake'

A lot of people are ragging on this series and I’m a little baffled as to why that is. I’m not sure if it’s because it doesn’t feature as much smack-in-the-face twists as its sister series, or if they just think it’s badly written. Honestly I’m enamoured with it, and it's a lot cleverer than people like to think. ‘Wake’ is another example of just how great this series is and though not as exciting as last week’s episode, it raised some new questions and made the kids' quest for answers even more urgent than before while hinting at even more craziness to come.

In ‘Wake’ Nick’s older brother Jake arrives in town after the death of his brother. After discovering that he is also a witch, Cassie tries to convince the other members of the circle to allow him to join them. Melissa has trouble dealing with Nick’s death, and Adam and Diana’s relationship hits a roadblock.

If there is anybody out there who isn’t quite sure that this series is what they wanted it to be then this episode should have qualm their fears. The series is successfully introducing new aspects to the series each week adding new layers to the mythology as it progresses. I’m all about ‘Diaries major twists and turns but what I like about this show’s approach is how things are happening quickly, but gradually and not in the same in-your-face style.

The main focus of this episode was the arrival of new guy, Jake. It was instantly obvious that he has oodles more chemistry than Nick ever had, and even more with Cassie than Adam does. He brought with him a myriad of questions and of course great story possibilities like who the hell these witch hunters are.

I was initially bored with the way the main love triangle was being handled, given how standard the whole thing was, magic aside of course, but thanks to how straight forward and strong a character Diana has proven to be, my opinion has changed completely. Her turning to Cassie for comfort is one of the strangest yet most realistic moments this series has had so far; Adam was her best friend and now that she’s let him go, she has nobody. I really like the friendship that seems to be developing between her and Cassie.

Another thing that this series has against 'The Vampire Diaries' is the mourning of the death of its characters. It’s common place for people to die in Mystic Falls, since it happens almost every week, but laughably they always seem to forget about the entire ordeal the following week (Jenna’s death excluded obviously). Though it seemed like ‘Circle was about to skip straight down that road, Melissa’s lecture to Faye snapped things right back around to just how devastating his death was for some of our teens, especially for her. The show has a really talented cast, and Jessica Parker Kennedy is one who has been given a great opportunity to shine the past few weeks.

Though it’s very strong right now there is still plenty of room for ‘The Secret Circle’ to grow and I’m excited to see where all these new revelations will take the series.

8.5/10
