Marc and Amanda have always been my favourite characters on the show, if only for the amazing comedy that they bring to the table. This episode was the first one that got them paired up in a way that sparked the duo in such a phenomenal way as to allow them to remain a series staple for ‘Betty’s entire run.
In ‘Fey’s Sleigh Ride’ Betty, Marc and Amanda face Wilhelmina’s wrath when they find out that someone they all spoke to got wind of MODE’s big holiday shoot, and stole their idea. Betty discovers something strange about her father’s health plan.
The big inquisition, like many of the other tests Betty has faced, is yet another big reminder of her desire to remain strong, and faithful to who she is, and never give in to peer pressure. Betty bites the bullet and confesses to Wilhelmina, despite the constant warnings from Marc and Amanda about how easy it would be for her to ruin their lives. She always knows who she is, and doesn’t want to compromise her integrity, even if it means losing her job. That’s something she worries about letting go come season 4.
Along with Marc and Amanda effortless hilarity, we’ve got every MODE player keeping things lively. Willy is the perfect devious, hugely intimidating boss and Vanessa really holds that aura of authority with ease. The mystery woman continues to meddle in the Meade’s affairs and proving her identity one of the greatest enigmas of the early episodes.
Of course, no episode of ‘Ugly Betty’ is complete without the usual Suarez drama, which is given even more focus this week when Papi’s health brings up a number of issues for their family. Despite how wonderful all of the characters in this series are there are certain traits that can be really difficult to take sometimes. Ignacio’s stubbornness to take medication that he so desperately needs is unfoundedly selfish, especially with Betty, Hilda and Justin spending every living moment fretting over his well-being.
There’s still a load to love about these early episodes, even if Walter’s attempts to win back B are easily some of the most annoying scenes in TV history. With such a great start, it’s easy to see that ‘Ugly Betty’ was much more than a passing fad.
9/10
